    Walking Tour of Agrigento

    centro_storico_ag
Here we are at Porta di Ponte. This is the entrance to the heart of the city where we will be visiting the historical centre of Agrigento. This entrance to via Atenea was built in 1868 on the ruins of one of the gates to the city which dated back to the 3rd century. It was built in a neoclassic style and you can see the stem of the city on one side and the stem of the Greek city on the other.

The historical centre of Agrigento (Kerkent to the Arabs, Gergent to the Normans and Girgenti until 1927) is on the Hill of Girgenti, a place chosen in the Middle Ages for defensive needs and also for its proximity to the new port.

We will be walking through the historical centre of Agrigento and explore the maze of tiny alleys, piazzas and side-streets of old Girgenti.

Walking tour of the Valley of the Temples

By the 5th century BC, the city of Akragas was vast and populated. It was surrounded by tall and strong city walls which defended it from any attacks on the city.
Like many Greek cities, Akragas was divided into 2 main areas: the high part, called ACROPOLI, where the government, counselors and military officials had their seats and then there was also a lower area which was inhabited by the rest of the population.

Excavations have also brought to light public buildings of the city, or rather the AGORA’. This was the main square where citizens carried on their daily lives.

    Kaos – Pirandello’s Birth Place

    casa-luigi-pirandello
Luigi Pirandello’s birth-home is a late-18th century country-house surrounded by olive trees and oaks. It stands alone and silent in the middle of Agrigento’s countryside, in this area known as Caos.

The Ricci Gramittos, the writer’s mother’s ancestors, took possession of the house in 1817 where they took refuge to escape a cholera epidemic that hit Sicily and it was here, in this house, where Pirandello was born on the 28th of June 1867.

    WALKING TOUR OF TAORMINA

    1. CORSO UMBERTO

    messina-corsa-umberto

Taormina’s main street is Corso Umberto I. It is about one kilometre long through the old medieval town from one ancient gateway to another, from Piazza Sant’ Antonio to Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II.
It has pedestrian only status so it is to stroll along and look at the shop windows or sit down for a nice caffé or ice cream. Piazza Duomo attracts a lot of people and the impressive Church of San Nicola dominates the square.
To the right of the piazza is Via Teatro Greco. A walk along this short street will bring you to the Greco Romana Theatre.

Taormina is located on a terrace of Mont Tauro, dominating the sea with views of Mt Etna. Over the centuries it has welcomed writers like Oscar Wilde, D.H. Lawrance, artists like Cary Grant, Gregory Peck, Marlena Dietrich, aristocrats and royalty. Taormina seems far removed from the economic realities of other Sicilian cities.
